He worked for one year in Bhubaneswar, Orissa in 2008 and performed about 50 joint replacements in Bhubaneswar, (Odisha) that year. At that time nobody was performing joint replacement surgery in Bhubaneswar, Orissa (Odisha) to the best of our knowledge. He performed Joint Replacement Surgeries on patients aged 23 Yrs to over 86Yrs. There are huge number of patients in Andhrapradesh and Orissa enjoying their life and newfound mobility after having Joint Replacement Surgery by Dr. Ravi Sankar Katragadda.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs joint replacement surgery?

Joint replacement surgery is useful to those who are suffering from grossly worn out joints. Most commonly affected joints are knees and hips. Most common disorder damaging the joints is Osteoarthritis. Also other conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and Avascular Necrosis cause damage to the joints. These patients also reach a stage where they require joint replacement to be able to walk without pain.

Does the joint replacement surgery work?

YES. YES. Joint replacement surgery is one the most wonderful treatments invented in the last 30 or 40 yrs. Millions of people have undergone this surgery all over the world and enjoying pain-free walking and joint function. It does wonders.

What is the correct age to have joint replacement surgery?

There is no specific age to have Joint Replacement Surgery. When a Joint is damaged grossly and lost its function then Joint Replacement Surgery is the only solution to restore function in the joint. I personally know of a famous Joint Replacement Surgeon whose daughter had undergone hip replacement surgery at the age of 15. I have replaced both hip joints of a 22Yr Old Engineer who couldn’t walk even 50Yards in 2004, now after 10Yrs he is still walking well, employed and earning good salary. At the other extreme I have replaced both knees of 86Yrs old man in 2005 and he is still walking well. Thus, it is not the age that determines the timing of surgery. The degree of damage to the joint, presence of pain and inability to walk well are the factors that determine the timing of surgery. In Shree Hospitals, Bhubaneswar 82 yr old gentleman had replacement of both knees and made a smooth and uneventful recover from surgery and went home happily.

What exactly is done during surgery?

During hip replacement the hip is exposed and the damaged femoral head (the ball) is removed and replaced with the implant. The acetabulum (the cup) is prepared and replaced with the correct size implant. Then the hip is reduced and the whole surgical site is washed with saline and closed.

During knee replacement the knee joint is exposed from the front. The lower end of the femur is measured and cut to the correct size of the corresponding implant in the same way the upper end of the tibia is measured and cut to the right size. Then the trial implants are kept in the position and checked. Then if the surgeon is happy with the position and alignment of the joint the actual implants are fixed to the bones using bone cement. Then the joint is washed with saline and closed.

What materials are used? Are there any side effects due to materials?

A wide variety of materials are used for manufacturing of implants. Cobalt-chromium alloys, special surgical grade inert steel, ultra high density poly ethylene, ceramics, and titanium are used in manufacturing the implants used in Hip joint and knee joint replacement surgeries. These materials have been tested extensively and been found to be safe to be used in the human bodies. They are safe and do not cause any harm. At Shree hospitals our surgeons use the best implants available and always use imported implants.

Will there be severe pain post-operatively?

During surgery there will be absolutely NO PAIN. In Shree Hospitals, Bhubaneswar all joint replacement patients will be receiving epidural analgesia continuously for a period of 48 to 72 hours after surgery. The medicine will be infused through a fine catheter in to epidural space. There will not be any significant pain and patient can exercised and start walking within 16 to 36 hours after surgery.

Will it be possible to Climb Steps after knee or hip replacement?

Yes, after the surgery within 4 or 5 days he will be able to use the staircase. Generally one will be able to return to office based work in three to six weeks.

How do I select the right hospital and the right surgeon?

It is advisable to select a surgeon who is experienced in doing Joint Replacement Surgery and has done a big number of joint replacements. Also the surgeon should have patience and explain about the surgery, preparation for surgery and advantages and disadvantages of the surgery. He should be able to give you a few names and telephone numbers of the patients who has been operated by the surgery. Those patients should be willing to talk to you and tell about their experience.

Coming to the selection of the hospital, there should be a good operation theatre with necessary facilities to ensure sterility in the OT. The hospital should be very clean. And there should be continuous presence of anaesthetist in the hospital. There should be a team of doctors like physicians and intensivists available in case there is a need. It is safe to have a good ICU in the hospital. Also find out the package rates if available. Beware of some big brand hospitals are notorious in hiking the bills after admission and surgery.

Are there any complications?

Yes. No operation is 100% safe. Important complications are

  1. Infection 2) Blood clots in Veins. (DVT)

Infection is a serious complication but rare. We at SHREE HOSPITALS take extreme precautions to avoid this complication. That is one of the reasons why one should be very careful in selecting the hospital and surgeon for surgery. One may get his or her operation cheaply in a cheap hospital but risk of infection may be more. Fortunately so far there is not a single case of infected joint replacement in our hospital.

If infection occurs it can be cured by debridement and intra-venous antibiotics etc.

Clots in the vein : DVT is also a possible complication and can lead to serious consequences. We at SHREE HOSPITALS regularly give prophylactic injections to prevent this complication after knee or hip replacement. These injections are costly, but we do not compromise on safety.

Why are these operations costly?

They implants are almost always imported from countries like US and Germany and they are expensive. They have been in use for a long time and have a proven track record of good results, hence they are preferred by all even though they are costly. One has to be un-compromising while doing this kind of surgeries to avoid complications. Draping materials, suture materials and lot of consumables come at deferent rates and quality. We at SHREE HOSPITALS always insist on good quality materials to ensure safety and efficacy. Certain injections (Low molecular weight Heparin) have to be used to prevent complications like DVT and PE. Same way the cost of epidural line, better ones are costlier.

Thus we at SHREE HOSPITALS use the best implants and best materials to ensure best possible results. The cost in our hospital is much less compared to big branded hospitals.
